School...practicum...new stuff for me...

School tries really hard to kick my butt some days. I've spent most of today trying to teach myself about laws of perceptual organization, dual coding theory, and all the details of the multi-store information processing system. And other stuff too. I can't even remember it all.

If you wondered, my practicum is awesome. I'll be spending the majority of my time teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to two little kids from Africa. The little girl just barely got here from a refugee camp, and she only knows a few words of English. You've never seen a child more grateful than this one. I handed her a book we're going to use to help her learn English. I said, "Book", pointed to it, and gave it to her. She clutched it to her chest and said, "Book? Me?!?" She is so eager to learn, and so grateful for every little thing she gets and every little bit of attention from a teacher. She could teach the Canadian kids a few things.

Want to know what I'm grateful for? My pretty new coat! I'm a fancy lady.

Big boy stuff!

For a while there, Max was losing teeth all the time. All the front ones came out, the big guys came in, and then...nothing. For years! Finally this week he lost a molar. It was so gross. I forgot what it's like to lose big teeth like that. Lots of crunching noises and blood.

This picture is awesome. Mouths are very interesting. Look how swollen the gums are where the new guy is trying to come in. I bet that hurts!

Corina's first EEG

Corina was exhausted today after her bad night last night, so she went to bed nice and early. (And seizure-free, I'm happy to announce!)

Max and I spent the evening looking through old photo albums. We came across this cute/sad picture of Corina when she was 5 months old. This is when she was first having tests for her seizures. It's her very first EEG. (I caught her mid-blink. She didn't normally look that lethargic.)

Back when she was a baby, the neurologist prepped us for the diagnosis of a brain tumour in her occipital region after he saw her EEG results. It turned out she was a miracle baby and there was nothing that serious going on at all. It's nice to remember that things aren't as bad as we originally feared they were. Seizures do really suck, but she's not going to die from them. I need to relax and remember that!

(The lady holding her is the nurse. She was so nice!)

Remember this?

My little Corina had another seizure tonight. This was the first one since last December, when we thought the voodoo cured her. Apparently the fix was temporary. If you're one who prays, we would sure appreciate some prayers for Corina. My guess is she's going to have some crappy times ahead.

Memories!

My Auntie Sue put a bunch of old pictures up on Facebook, and I stole them all. I had never seen most of those pictures before, so seeing them today brought back a ton of memories. Sometimes it seems like just yesterday we were all so little, but then when I look at these pictures, the memories are almost like a dream. I can't quite grasp them anymore.

So anyway, here are a bunch of my dream-like memories for you. (And for me. Well, almost completely for me.)

This is Christmas at Grandma and Grandpa's. That's Katie and me, and Auntie Carol and Uncle Norm.
Dana, me and Uncle Phil, having fun at Grandma and Grandpa's.
This is Katie and me, and I don't have any idea where we are. Apparently we're outside somewhere.
Halloween at Grandma and Grandpa's. I think everyone dressed up as a "punk" at least once in the 80's.
I think this one is so cute. That's Krista and Grandpa dancing at Auntie Sue's wedding.
My adorable Grandma. She was always so funny.
That's Grandma, Auntie Sue, Dana in an awesome outfit, and baby me. I love my mom's red curtains. (Drapes, as she called them.)
My Nana and me, and the red curtains. (This one is from my dad. My dad is from my Nana.)
My mom (in red), her sisters Sue and Carol, Grandma, and Uncle Jim. I wonder why Grandpa didn't get in the picture.
Wasn't that fun? Yes...yes it was.

Meet The Teacher Night. (My kids are great.)

Bragging.

On Meet The Teacher Night, the grade 5 leadership kids put on a skit for us. Max was playing a new kid at the school, which was the starring role. Woo hoo! I was quite impressed with his acting. No, really. It was impressive. He didn't just read his lines in that halting I'm...reading...my...lines kind of way kids often do. He acted.

Corina is doing so well in grade one. Her teacher said she is going to need lots of challenge work, because she is way beyond the grade one work. Good brain on that little girl. Also, she said Corina is very well-behaved, polite, and mature. And it's true. She pretty much never misbehaves. What perfect children I have. I love 'em.

Dick and Daniele

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I watch Big Brother. It was summer holidays and I had lots of free time. So sue me! (Please don't.)

Anyway, there were two people on that show who I grew to actually hate. I pretend to hate lots of people, but I don't truly hate anyone except Dick and Daniele, the disgusting father-daughter team. Dick is like a white trashier version of Tommy Lee. Think about that for a second. Be horrified. He threatened to rape the corpse of a female housemate on the show. That was one of his milder days. And Daniele is the most self-absorbed, whiniest witch ever. "You don't understaaaaaaaaaaand how haaaaaaaaaard it iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis....this suuuuuuuuuuuuucks..."

And then tonight Zach messed up, and Dick and Daniele made it to the final two. It shouldn't bother me so much, but it does. You don't understaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand how much it buuuuuuuuuuuuugs meeeeeeeeeeeee!

HATE.

Breastfeeding and Facebook

I love Facebook. I really do. I use it to keep in touch with nearly everyone in my family, since they are all on the other side of the country. It's a great website.

But. BUT! I am irritated about the whole breastfeeding thing going on with them right now. They are deleting pictures of women who are breastfeeding, and the reason is that the pictures have "obscene content". They even deleted a woman's profile because of her pictures. It's all over the news today. (Click that!) I've had a breastfeeding picture on my profile for a few months now, but they haven't caught my crime yet.

Behold the obscenity!!!

That is one of my favourite pictures in the world. There is love all over that picture. Those are the kind of pictures they're deleting from the site. It makes me sad.

So yeah. I wonder what is wrong with people's perceptions of women's bodies, that when we use them the way they were created to be used, it is considered obscene. Those blobs of fat on our chests were created so we could feed our babies, not so guys could have something to look at while they spank it.

There's the matter of being discrete while feeding. Well, have you ever gotten into bed and pulled the covers up over your head because you were cold? How long did it take before you were roasting? When I do it, I start feeling like I'm going to suffocate. Now who would want to eat their meals that way? If you would want to, then by all means, eat that way. But I wouldn't want to, and babies would prefer some fresh air while they eat too.

Anyway, do what you want with your own boobs. It's your choice. But really, can we get over our perverted attitude about breasts? Sheesh...

Oh, and one other thing. There's a group on Facebook called "Hey Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!" I joined it. Want to join it too? Okay then!

Corina's tooth came out! (Finally...)

Corina got off the school bus today with a mouthful of blood and shouted, "One of the connectors broke!" Very exciting! Here is her "before" picture.

This is the "during" picture. She was very brave. (I love pulling out teeth!)

And the "after" picture. I can't believe my tiny little girl is already losing her teeth. Time goes by way too quickly.
Well at least today went better than when Max lost his first tooth. I pulled the tooth out easily because it was just dangling, and he and Corina were absolutely terrified when they saw it in my hand. Good times.

Britney Spears

Sometimes I worry about her as if I'm her mom. I was kind of rooting for her last night. I wanted her to redeem herself. I saw a short clip of her rehearsal, and it actually looked okay. But then the actual performance...holy crap. She was completely stoned. She just wandered around the stage and forgot to even lipsynch half the time. And the outfit - well, it's not like she's obese or anything, but maybe it's a little soon after the babies to be so nudie. I worry she'll be dead soon. What a mess!

I'm on a homework break.

I don't know what this says about my school year, but I already don't care about any of this stuff. I'm sitting here doing assignments about why Terry has an inability to reverse operations, explaining Sarah's information processing problems and the reason Brent's response was either conditioned or unconditioned, analyzing Sandy's motivation, and then wondering why so many of the people I'm reading about have names from my own family...but I just want to go outside or do something silly and useless! Maybe starting back to class is just freaking me out after a really fun summer. Playing with my kids is so much more enjoyable than doing homework.

School pictures.

Corina in her school uniform. So cute! She doesn't actually have to wear one, but we thought it was so pretty.

Max in his cool Circa shirt. He loves that shirt. Loves.

I have really good looking kids!

First Day of School

We kind of started off on the wrong foot. We went to bed nice and early, but Corina must have been stressed out, because she was awake for hours. Finally she climbed in bed with me, and I went to sleep while she stared at the ceiling. Once she was finally asleep, Max came running in crying because he had a bad dream. He climbed in bed with us. Corina woke up again. The three of us were awake for a while together, and then off and on all night each time we kicked or poked somebody. We were pretty tired when we got up this morning. (Which was 5:45, by the way.)

Here are my little cuties just after 7:00 am on their first day of school. Almost time to walk out the door.
This is why we had to leave so early today. The principal asked five of the grade five kids to come early and basically pose as safety patrollers for the media. Of course my awesome kid was chosen. He's going to be in the paper tomorrow! After the fake safety patrolling, they got to help real people cross the street for the first time. Yay!

Corina is in grade one now. That means she goes to school all day long. My little baby! She has Max's grade one teacher, so she feels very comfortable. Corina used to hang around in that class all the time back when she was only two.
They both had a great first day!

The last day of summer holidays

"Mommy, may I use the scotch tape? I want to make a bum chin."
And so she did. She was very proud of it.

Tomorrow the kids go back to school, and I go back on Thursday. So far I haven't cried about it. That means I'm doing better than last year, so yay me! We went for a picnic at the lake today to kind of celebrate going back to school. It's really not anything to celebrate though.

Also tomorrow, Max will be on the news! He has to go to school early in the morning to film something about safety patrollers and driving safely and such. Exciting!

Another exciting thing is Max's new BMX he bought today with his own money. Apparently his mountain bike isn't cool, but this one is. I'm too old to even see the difference. And now he's out there riding the old one around, trying to get someone to buy it off him. He's a smart kid. It looks as though the boy who was run over by a bus in the spring is going to buy it. (By the way, the kid lived. Obviously. In fact the doctors say he is a miracle child. His bike wasn't so lucky.)
